Got smelly towels? How many of you have left towels in the wash and completely forgot about them? Overnight? Admit it, we have all done this at some point! Unfortunately, I must admit this happens rather often in my house. It’s funny how often this happens in my home because I CAN NOT STAND the smell of towels after they have been left in the washer for an extended period of time. Once you leave your towels in the washer once it seems like you can never get the smell out.
And, if you are like me, I love the smell of fabric softener. I have been guilty of using a little too much fabric softener in my laundry ALL THE TIME. Did you know fabric softener is probably one the biggest culprits to yucky smelling towels? Yep! Too much fabric softener and build-up over time is contributing to yucky smelly towels.
Try these steps to help restore your towels to smelling fresh and clean again:
- Run your towels through a wash cycle on the hottest cycle. Add 1 cup vinegar to the washer. Do not add detergent!
- Re-run your towels (do not dry) through a wash cycle on the hottest cycle, this time using 1/2 cup baking soda and 10-15 drops essential oil. Remember, do not use detergent.
- Dry towels until thoroughly dry.
Yay! You have fresh clean smelling towels again!
You can use whatever essential oil you prefer. If you are unsure which essential oils to use I have listed a few suggestions for you below:
Cleansing Blend– Fresh, airy, herbal.
Lavender– Powdery, floral, light
Calming Blend– Sweet, warm powdery sent. Hint of vanilla.
Lemon– Clean, fresh, citrus, bright
Eucalyptus– Camphoraceous, airy
Invigorating Blend– Citrus, sweet
Be sure to follow me and check back in this week when I talk more about fabric softener, toxins and dryer balls.
